TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – After 90 days, the 2011 Kansas legislative session is over.
Legislators began their final day on Thursday morning, working through the night to finish the state’s 2012 budget and numerous other measures.
Senators are the first to go, leaving the Statehouse about 5:20 a.m. Friday. The House closed its business about 45 minutes later. Both chambers will return June 1 for the ceremonial closing of the session.
During the last day, legislators sent Republican Gov. Sam Brownback a $13.8 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1. It eliminates a shortfall that once approached $500 million and creates a surplus of $50 million through cuts to state agencies.
