SALINA POLICE: Nothing Illegal About Man Living On Iron Avenue Bridge

During the past few weeks if you have driven on east Iron near the Salina Community Theater, you may have noticed a man who appears to be living on the southwest corner of the Iron Avenue Bridge.

Listeners to 910 KINA Radio have been calling and asking questions whether or not it is illegal to set up camp on the bridge. The Salina Post put the question to Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney Tuesday, and he said the man is not violating any laws.

Sweeney said that if there is no permanent structure put up, anyone can stay on public property, as long as it is not a park with a curfew.

While Founders Park is located on to the north side of the bridge and Iron Avenue, The bridge and surrounding land that leads to the river is not park property and anyone can stay there as long as they want.

It is not known if the man is from the Salina area, or why he chose to live on or near the bridge.
