City of Salina E-Waste Collection Event June 4th

The City of Salina will hold an electronic waste or “e-waste” collection event on Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Public Works / General Services yard at 412 E. Ash Street. There is no limit on the number of items each participant may dispose of; however, each participant must be a Saline County resident, business, school, or government entity. There is a $5 charge per CRT television or CRT monitor. Fees must be paid in cash, check, or money order and will be due at the time of drop-off.

E-waste is consumer electronic equipment that has become obsolete or is no longer functional and needs to be discarded. Old computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, keyboards, and microwaves all fall into the category of e-waste. For a detailed listing of items that will be accepted, please check under City News on the City of Salina website at www.salina-ks.gov or direct questions to the City of Salina’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 785-826-6638.

Electronic products contain valuable recoverable materials such as aluminum, copper, gold, silver, plastics, and ferrous metals, along with hazardous materials like mercury, lead, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants. Recycling e-waste not only clears space in your home and saves valuable space in our landfill, it also preserves valuable resources and keeps potentially toxic materials out of the environment.

In order to help provide an organized traffic flow in and out of the facility, a sign marking the entrance into the Public Works / General Services yard will be posted and traffic cones will be visible, indicating the direction of traffic. This will guide participants to the drop-off location. Participants will remain in their vehicles as collection staff inventory and unload the e-waste. If a line of vehicles develops which exceeds the capacity at the facility, collection staff will direct participants to line up along the west side of North 3rd Street facing south toward Ash Street.
