Costs of April storm damage sets record in Kansas

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Storms that swept through Kansas in April did an estimated $502.5 million in damage, setting a single-month record for the state.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger says the estimated loss to insured property in April was substantially higher than the previous record of $337.5 million in June 2008.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Thursday that the estimate came from about 66,000 insurance claims submitted in April.

Praeger says most of the claims were filed after wind and hail storms hit northeast Kansas April 3 and another series of storms
near Wichita and south-central Kansas April 8.

With April figures included, Praeger projects that 2011 losses around Kansas will be at $531.5 million. That figure does not include flood losses.
