Texas Man Sentenced 41 Months In Federal Prison For Illegal Deer Hunts In Kansas

WICHITA, Kansas – A Martinsville, Texas man convicted of running an illegal deer hunting camp in Kansas learned his fate in court Tuesday.

James Butler will be spending the next 41 months in federal prison for conducting illegal deer hunts at Camp Lonestar near the town of Coldwater in Comanche County with his brother, Marlin. He’s also facing $50,000 in fines and restitution and three years of supervised release when he gets out of prison.

He and his brother have both pleaded guilty to running the illegal deer hunting farm from 2005-2008. Prosecutors say during that time, dozens of white tail and mule deer were killed during expensive guided trips organized by the Butler brothers.

“Hunters guided by Mr. Butler killed deer in excess of the annual bag limit, they hunted deer without permits, they killed deer using illegal equipment, actually used night vision scopes that you see the military use,” said U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom.

Marlin Butler is scheduled to be sentenced Friday. He also faces a lengthy prison term.
