PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Kansas ‘Defunding’ Part Of National Statute Against It

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Lawyers for Planned Parenthood say a new Kansas law that defunded its chapter in the state is part of a national campaign to cut off federal family planning money for the organization.

In a court document filed this week, the lawyers say Planned Parenthood is targeted because it advocates abortion rights.

A federal judge will hear arguments next week on a proposed temporary injunction to stop the Kansas measure from taking effect and restore funding for Planned Parenthood clinics in Wichita and Hays.

Attorneys for Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri contend that after Congress failed to bar federal funding for Planned Parenthood, several states have taken up the cause.

Efforts similar to the Kansas action have also been made in Indiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
