Census Releases National Home, Rental Figures; Kansas Homeownership At 67.8%

New Census figures released on home ownership in 2010 show that Manhattan was the only metropolitan area in the United States where the percentage of renters outnumbered home owners.

The figures out Thursday provide a snapshot of housing conditions.

Manhattan had a homeownership rate of 49.5% in 2010. It is home of Kansas State University and adjacent to the Army’s Fort Riley. Both institutions have transient populations who stay in the area for two to four years.

Kansas’ homeownership rate was 67.8%.

Other metro areas with low homeownership rates include College Station-Bryan, Texas, at 50%, home to Texas A&M University, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, Calif., 50.9%, and New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa., 51%.
