Did you know that there are several different holiday plants that can be toxic to animals?
This is just a friendly reminder from Atherton Veterinary Clinic to make sure that your animals stay safe from the following:
• Poinsettias – these plants are usually not deadly when ingested, but can cause serious stomach upset.
• Mistletoe – poisoning by these plants is rare, but can occur should your animal ingest large quantities of berries.
• Holly – once again, poisoning from this plant is rare, but can occur if a large number of berries are consumed.
• Jerusalem Cherry – it’s the berries again! These berries resemble cherry tomatoes in appearance and taste and can be deadly in dogs, cats, and some birds.
• Christmas Tree – animals tend to steer clear of most evergreens, but if your pet does decide to nibble on your Christmas tree you don’t have to worry about poison, but you will want to keep an eye on their eating and bathroom habits for a while. The needles of this tree can cause a bowel obstruction so beware.
