On February 25th, the Salina Sirens hosted their first home scrimmage against the Junction City’s Stone Cold Foxes. The game took place at Webster Conference Center and was an invitation-only event. The hard hitting action showed the guests exactly what roller derby is all about.
Both guests and teams learned the importance of balancing a strong defensive strategy with an efficient offense. Each line of girls on the track consisted of four girls, a pivot, and three blockers per team. It was their responsibility to use that line to defend against the opposing team’s jammer, since she is the only one able to score points. All while trying to clear a path for their own team’s jammer.
Neither the Sirens nor the Foxes were ready to quit when the clock ran out in the second period signaling the end of the game. So after the coaches consulted the refs, the fun continued for a total of four more jams (rounds). And the hits just kept on coming, with a final score of 244 to 100, Foxes. Nice job to all my girls and our sisters! Remember… Love Gently, Skate Hard!!
