Just before 11 pm Wednesday, crews from the Salina Fire Department responded to the 1800 Block of Vortex Avenue for a report of a field on fire.

Upon arrival crews found a vacant field on fire and spreading quickly.The departments 4-wheel-drive brush truck had to be used to contain and extinguish the fire.

The investigation after the fire determined the cause to be a result of illegal discharge of fireworks within the city limits.

There are several industrial facilities in this area, none of which were affected.

The Salina Fire Department continues to remind everyone that the conditions are very very dry, this compounded by the winds in an open area such as this can cause the fire to spread very quickly.

The discharge of fireworks is strictly prohibited until July 3rd and 4th from the hours of 8 am to 11 pm.

Ellsworth County issued an immediate ban on fireworks Thursday afternoon.
