Tyler McElwee was perfect against Rock Creek in the opening round of pool play in the Kansas Grand Slam Tournament pitching four innings striking out six, walking none, and giving up no hits.
Salina’s bats were slow to start against Rock Creek scoring just three runs in the first inning, two coming from a Zach Nachbar triple and only picking up one run in the second inning off of a wild pitch, leaving the bases loaded in both innings.
Hawks gave the big blow in the top half of the third inning, striking for seven runs. Lane Driscoll started it off with a triple scoring Connor Boyer who reached on a error and J.W. Maldaner capped if off with a three run home run, giving the Hawks a 11-0 lead which would be the final. Mustangs pitching staff struggled throughout the whole game giving up eight hits and walking six.
Salina will play the Hays Eagles tomorrow July 1 at 1:30 at James Matson field. Both teams won their opening round games.
