Lights Out

With the lights not working at Dean Evans Stadium the game between the Salina Hawks and Topeka Scrappers was called early due to the unusual situation of darkness, but it was the Hawks taking advantage scoring on two wild pitches to win 3-0.

With four hits combined between the two teams it quickly turned into a pitchers duel in which Lane Driscoll prevailed victorious.  Driscoll retired the first eight batters before giving up his first hit of the game.  Dyvon Frye the pitcher for the Topeka Scrappers, while he only gave up one hit through four innings, he bit the dust walking eight batters and allowing Matt Rowe and Kyler Stover both to score on his wild pitches within the first two innings.  Ryan Zeferjahn came in relief for the fifth and sixth innings giving up just one hit as well striking out one, and walking one.

Driscoll in the fourth inning  started to go sour a bit walking two and giving up his second hit loading the bases up with just one out, but Brett Lichter grounded into a double play ending the inning and allowing Driscoll to exhale a bit. From that point on Driscoll was lights out. With the bull-pin going to work the last two innings Driscoll came out with his best stuff.  Once he had a double taken away from him for not touching first, Driscoll would strikeout three of the last six batters he saw bringing his total to six for the game.

Salina had it’s chances to open the game up and give Driscoll some cushion as far as run support, but the Hawks left seven on through just the first three innings and 10 for the entire game.  Zach Nachbar got the games only run batted in which came in the sixth inning with a harsh hopper that was out of the reach of third baseman Dyvon Frye.  Nachbar also had the only two hits for the Hawks.

With the win the Hawks finish Pool Play in the Grand Slam Tournament 3-0 and outscoring their opponents 23-2. Salina will now not play until Tuesday at 10 a.m. for the Bracket Semifinals against the winner of the third place finisher from Bracket A (A3) and the second place finisher from Bracket B (B2)
