A Salina man is scammed not once, but twice with a computer scam. Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said that between February 19th and 20th a 54-year-old man received a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft and his computer had a virus. The man was offered a service contact and selected a two-year contract for $139. He used a debit card to pay for the contract.
The man made contact with his bank on the 20th and found that there had been seven additional transactions made to Western Union that totaled more than $1,000. The bank cancelled the man’s debit card and issued a new one.
Later that same day, the man received another phone call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft again. The man complained about the extra transactions, and was told to give the new debit card number to them, and he would have money returned to his account. Instead almost $2,500 in 13 additional transactions was removed from his account. The total amount lost was $3,559.
The man reported the incident to police last Friday.
