Saline County Clerk Don Merriman said a problem on election night with the paper ballot scanner caused some votes to not be counted. Following the recount requested by Hardy, who lost a coin flip Monday to candidate Joe Hay Jr during a canvass of the votes by County Commissioners, Hardy finished third with 2151 votes, Hay had 2,148 votes. After the canvass on Monday, both candidates had 2,141 votes.

Before the results of the recount came in, Hay said if he were to lose the recount, he would run again for office.

Merriman said since this is the first tie vote he has gone through outside precinct committee men and women, he would not have gone with the coin flip after the canvass, but waited until the recount.

Merriman also said a check for $100 written by Hardy for the recount will be returned. Hardy was not present at the recount Wednesday morning.
