The Kansas State High School Association state wrestling tournaments are set to take place this weekend and will feature several wrestlers from area schools.
In Hays, the Class 3A/2A/1A will feature an outstanding Sacred Heart junior. Abel Alvarez will compete in the 220 lbs. weight class. He goes to state with an overall record of 31-1. Southeast of Saline sends two wrestlers to the state tournament. Freshman Rudy Rodriguez will compete in the 152 lbs. weight class and senior Jordan Schoen will compete in the 170 lbs. weight class. Rodriguez is 32-7 on the season, while Schoen enters state with a record of 34-9.
Two Ell-Saline wrestlers qualified for state as well. Freshman Nick Davenport, 20-5, will compete in the 182 lbs. weight class and Junior Donivyn Will, 21-4, will compete in the 145 lbs. weight class. Bennington will also be represented by two wrestlers at state. Seniors T.J. Ragnoni, 145 lbs. weight class, and Kyler Mick, 160 lbs. weight class, both qualified for state. Ragnoni is 33-2 on the season and Mick is 36-2.
Minneapolis will be represented at state by junior Austin Constable, who will compete in the 120 lbs. weight class. Ellsworth Senior Ethan Haase qualified for state in 195 lbs. weight class with a record of 23-14.
Salina South sends two wrestlers to the Class 5A tournament in Park City, while Salina Central sends nine.
The Cougars will be led by junior Allen Heberly, who will compete in the 138 lbs. weight class, and Sophomore Brenner Vogan, who will compete in the 126 lbs. class. Heberly is 23-8 on the season and Vogan is 24-16. The Mustangs are led by senior Michael McMullen, who enters state with a record of 35-1 in the 220 lbs. weight class, and senior Dalton Peters, who enters state with a record of 32-1 in the 170 lbs. weight class. Senior Kyle True goes to state to compete in the 182 lbs. weight class with a record of 35-3. Seniors Jackson Helvey (31-8 in the 195 lbs. weight class), Isaac Korinek (26-18 in the 138 lbs. weight class) and Terrell Harder (18-19 in the 145 lbs. weight class), and freshman Taylon Peters (35-7 in the 160 lbs. weight class), Drew Burgoon (28-8 in the 106 lbs. weight class), and Julion Falco (27-13 in the 113 lbs. weight class) round out Central’s state tournament qualifiers.
The Class 4A tournament in Salina will feature several Abilene wrestlers. Among them is junior Tanner McGivney in the 106 lbs. weight class. He heads into state with an overall record of 31-5 this season. He is joined by several of his teammates:
- Sam Burt (Junior) – 220 lbs. weight class
- Trevor Casteel (Sophomore) – 120 lbs. weight class
- Jaron Christiensen (Junior) – 195 lbs. weight class
- Trey Hoerner (Sophomore) – 152 lbs. weight class
- Andy Tope (Senior) – 285 lbs. weight class
- Cole Whitehair (Senior) – 113 lbs. weight class
- Dakota Whiteley (Freshman) – 138 lbs. weight class
- Dauson Whiteley (Junior) – 170 lbs. weight class
- Kevin Wilson (Senior) – 160 lbs. weight class
- Cody Wuthnow (Junior) – 126 lbs. weight class
McPherson has five wrestlers that qualified for the 4A tournament as well. They include junior Austin Eldredge in the 132 lbs. weight class. He comes to state with an overall record of 26-6. Senior Ty Goss heads to state in the 285 lbs. weight class with an overall record of 38-7. Along with Eldredge and Goss, McPherson brings three more wrestlers to the state tournament:
- Brynton Crews (Sophomore) – 126 lbs. weight class
- Kaleb Jost (Senior) – 182 lbs. weight class
- Kole Cretzer (Senior) – 120 lbs. weight class
Smoky Valley will be represented in this tournament by four talented wrestlers lead by junior Austin Lustfield, who comes to state with 31-3 in the 126 lbs. weight class. He is joined by three other Vikings:
- Beck Elliott (Junior) – 170 lbs. weight class
- Austin Golden (Junior) – 145 lbs. weight class
- Allan Wampler (Junior) – 182 lbs. weight class
Chapman sends three talented wrestlers to state as well this year. Senior Jason Zook enters the 4A tournament with an outstanding 36-1 record in the 285 lbs. weight class. He is joined by fellow senior Jake Stoneberger, who heads to state with a record of 31-3 in the 195 lbs. weight class. Along with Zook and Stoneberger, the Irish also sends Sophomore Colin Henderson to state in the 113 lbs. weight class.
State tournaments are set to take place this Friday and Saturday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina (Class 4A), Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays (Class 3A/2A/1A), and Hartman Arena in Park City (Class 6A/5A).
