SECOND UPDATE: The cause of a west Salina mobile home fire over the weekend remains under investigation.
Salina Fire Marshal Roger Williams tells The Salina Post the cause of the fire, which started just before 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Patio Mobile Home Manor, 1200 W. Crawford, is officially listed as undetermined.
Williams said the fire started in the living room of mobile home, which was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
“I don’t think it was intentionally started,” he said. “There were some personal artifacts inside that lead us to believe it wasn’t intentional.”
Williams said the mobile home was legally unoccupied at the time of the fire, but there were some indications that it may have been illegally occupied. “There may have been some transients staying in there,” he said. Fire investigators also found three space heaters inside the burned out home, but Williams said none of them had been turned on at the time of the fire.
This fire was the second mobile home fire within a span of four days in Salina.
On Wednesday, a 3-year-old boy died and two others were injured in a fire at Del Ray Mobile Estates, 917 N. 13th. That fire destroyed two mobiles homes and damaged a third.
The toddler was trapped inside when firefighters arrived. He was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where he died. His 49-year-old grandmother was severely burned and flown to Wichita for treatment. A 3-month-old infant was also taken to Wichita for treatment of respiratory issues and later released. A 6-year-old girl escaped the fire without injury.
On Monday, Williams said the cause of that fire had yet to be officially determined. The investigation is ongoing.
