Scammer strikes again

Thursday night at 11:50, police were notified about another scam.

According to Captain Paul Forrester, a 55-year-old man received a phone call from a male claiming to be a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office. The victim was told that he had an active warrant, he should purchase $2,500 worth of iTunes gift cards, take pictures of the cards, and send them to an email address.

The man followed the directions and received another call from the “deputy” stating he had an additional warrant, he should purchase $1,500 worth of iTunes cards and follow the same procedure. He was contacted again and was told that there was a problem with the last transaction and that he would have to go through the process again.

The victim’s brother used his credit card to pay for the iTunes cards.

The total loss came to $5,500.

The Sheriff’s Office does not make calls requesting personal information nor do they receive payments on prepaid cards.
