Doyle “Mick” Michael

Doyle “Mick” Michael, 87, of Mankato, Kansas, died Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato, Kansas. He was born on February 1, 1931, in Lake Andes, South Dakota, to Gilbert and Icel (Ritter) Michael (Haegert). He graduated from Esbon High School in Esbon, Kansas, in 1949 and attended Fort Hays State College (University) for a short period prior to enlisting in the Navy. He served from 1950 to 1953 (during the time of the Korean War) and earned the rank of aviation mechanic 3rd class.

On October 5, 1952, he married Esther Fogo in Burr Oak, Kansas. Following their marriage, they lived in Corpus Christie, Texas, and Peace Dale, Rhode Island. Following his discharge from the Navy, they resided in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while Mick attended Spartan School of Aeronautics.

In 1956, Mick and Esther moved to Denver, Colorado, where he worked for Continental Airlines as a mechanic, inspector, and in other positions. He also was employed for a short time by Martin-Marietta, but retired from Continental Airlines in 1988. He and Esther remained in Denver until 2008, when they moved to Mankato, Kansas.

Mick loved all aspects of flight, and was a licensed pilot and longtime member/mechanic of the Ten-Hi Flying Club in Broomfield, Colorado. He was also an active golfer, trophy-winning ping pong player and member of the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother Vilo. He is survived by daughter Laura (Jan) Crum of Mankato; son Ron (Jan) of Lindsborg; two grandchildren; one great granddaughter; along with numerous step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at 11 a.m., in the Esbon Cemetery, followed by a time for fellowship at the Esbon Cafe.

The family suggests memorials to the Jewell County Hospital or Golden Years Club in Mankato, or the Esbon American Lelgion. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, is in charge of arrangements.
