There are two groups of Trojans in the North Central Activities Association and often both teams contend for the league title. The NCAA crown was not decided on Friday night but, Southeast of Saline took a major step towards the crown.
On a sloppy Steve Fritz Field, the two squads were not only getting used to each other, but they also spent the first half getting used to the conditions. The first half was filled with slips and mishandled footballs. The only score came at the end of the second quarter as the SES defense scored a safety and led 2-0 at halftime.
Beloit would take their first lead on the opening drive of the second half. Zach Meier ran 55 yards to the endzone and after the PAT kick, Beloit would lead 7-2. That was the only score of the third quarter.
SES would come storming back in the fourth with back to back passing touchdowns. The first score would come with just under eleven minutes left in the game as Jaxson Gebhardt would convert a fourth down play by finding Seth Eklund on a wheel route and a ten yard touchdown pass. The PAT would fail and Southeast of Saline would lead 8-7. After the Trojan defense held Beloit to a three and out, the SES offense would strike again. This time, Gebhardt found Raef Boley in the back of the end zone on a 20 yard touchdown pass. PAT would fail, but Southeast would extend their lead, 14-7 with 6:39 left to play.
Beloit quarterback Hudson Gray would take his offense down the field quickly with timely passing and back to back running plays. Gray would score from 13 yards out pulling Beloit within a single point. The visiting Trojans would go for the win by attempting a two-point conversion pass which was batted away by Seth Ecklund. All Southeast of Saline had to do was cover the onside kick and take a knee to win, 14-13.
Beloit drops to 1-1 and will play Minneapolis next week. Southeast of Saline moves to 2-0 and will visit 2-0 Russell next Friday.
