The Kansas City Chiefs (5-0) remained perfect on the season as they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2) Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium by a score of 30-14.
Here are 10 observations from the game:
1. The Chiefs’ defense was the story on Sunday
There’s been so much talk about the Chiefs’ offense through four games and the numbers they’ve put up that some people questioned what would happen if they weren’t able to put up video-game-like numbers in a game. Could they still pull out a win by leaning on the defense?
Well, that happened on Sunday.
The Chiefs’ defense was the top story. They finished the game with five sacks, 12 quarterback hits and forced five turnovers.
While the final stats show that the Jaguars had 505 yards of total offense, the Chiefs’ defense set the tone from the very beginning with Dee Ford and Justin Houston getting early hits on Jaguars’ quarterback Blake Bortles.
That pressure carried over to the rest of the game as Bortles was constantly having to move around the pocket and throw off-balance.
2. The difference was inside the red zone
The Chiefs’ defense held the Jaguars to just 1 of 5 inside in the red zone, and three of the Chiefs’ four interceptions off Bortles in the game actually came in the END ZONE.
They stepped up when they had to on Sunday.
3. The Chiefs won a physical battle against one of the AFC’s best teams
It was a different kind of win for the Chiefs on Sunday, and it seems like that’s been the case for the past five games now.
They had to find a different way to achieve the same result, and they did.
The Jaguars’ defense is the epitome of swagger. They’re the league’s top defense and they aren’t afraid to let people know—both in the physicality they play with through the whistle (and the echo of the whistle), but also in how they talk and carry themselves.
The Chiefs had to step up and match that, and they did.
