The Salina High School Central Pylon is among the elite of high school journalism!

Central recently was notified that the Pylon was one of 26 high school newspapers in the country to received the Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA).

“This is the big one because we have never won this award and it is the highest honor you can receive,” Central Journalism Teacher Shelby Dinkel told Salina Post.

Dinkel noted that the award was for the 2017-18 Pylon.

Additionally, the first issue of this year’s Pylon was named to the the NSPA Chicago convention Best of Show list in the Newsmagazine category, Dinkel said. Central was the only Kansas school in the Best of Show Newsmagazine category.

According to the NSPA website, “the Best of Show competition is held at all national conventions sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association. The Best of Show award does not signify a ranking of national excellence, but rather overall excellence among the attendees and entries.”
