WICHITA — Wichita State’s Jaime Echenique was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the week of December 10-16.
In two Shocker victories, the 6-11 junior averaged 14.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks on 70 percent shooting (helped by five dunks).
Echenique scored the game-winning basket and notched his second double-double of the year on Saturday against Southern Miss, finishing with a career-high 17 points, 11 boards and a pair of blocks. WSU trailed 60-59 with less than a minute to play when he converted an alley-oop from Ricky Torres for the go-ahead score.
In Wednesday’s win over Jacksonville State, Echenique put up 12 points and seven rebounds.
For the year, Echenique is averaging 9.4 points and leads the team in rebounds (6.6) and blocked shots (13). He’s swatted a shot in each of the 10 games this season – tied for the third-longest Shocker streak since 1986 (when blocks became an official NCAA statistic).
Echenique is the third different WSU player to win a weekly honor from the conference office this year, joining Samajae Haynes-Jones and Markis McDuffie.
Wichita State (6-4) hosts Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday. Tickets are still available through the Shocker Ticket Office (316-978-FANS) or online at goshockers.com/mbbtickets.
