UPDATED: Sheriff’s Office works four ice-related wrecks Tuesday

UPDATED 1:46 p.m. Thursday: The Saline County Sheriff’s Office has corrected information concerning the wreck at East Shipton Road and Wasserman Way.

Icy conditions played a factor in four accidents, including two rollovers, worked by the Saline County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.

The first occurred at 9:03 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Kipp Road and East Old 40 Highway northeast of New Cambria, according to Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander.

Courtney Laun, 37, of Abilene, was westbound in the 7700 block of East Old Highway 40 when she lost control of the 1993 Chevrolet Blazer she was driving, Melander said. The Blazer went into the ditch and rolled, coming to rest on its top, he said.

EMS responded, but treatment was refused, he added.

The second accident occurred about an hour later, at 10:04 a.m., near the intersection of Magnolia and Gypsum Valley Road in eastern Saline County.

Melander said that Ryan Whitehair, 27, of Salina, was eastbound on Magnolia in a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 when he lost control of the pickup on the icy road. The pickup went into the south ditch and rolled, Melander said.

EMS responded for minor injuries, but treatment was refused, he said.

Shortly after noon, deputies responded to the intersection of East Shipton Road and Wasserman Way north of Salina.

Melander said that a 2006 Jeep Wrangler driven by William Burke of Salina failed to stop at the stop sign and struck a 2003 Snap-on Tools Kenworth motor truck driven by Phillip Hurd, 61, of Salina.

Burke’s age was not available, he said.

There were no injuries in the accident, Melander said.

Then, at 2:45 p.m., deputies responded to the Singh Travel Plaza, 2124 N. Hedville Road, west of Salina for the report of a vehicle sliding into a fuel island at the travel plaza, Melander said. He explained that Kirkland Woodson, 20, of Brookville, was southbound on Hedville Road in a 2000 GMC Sierra when he attempted to turn into the travel plaza. Melander said the pickup hit a patch of ice and spun out, striking the fuel island. The fuel island sustained $200 worth of damage, he added.
