TOPEKA, Kan. — Members of the Joint Committee on State Building Construction elected Rep. J.R. Claeys (R-Salina) to lead the committee this session.
Claeys will serve as the committee chairman for the 2019 legislative session after serving as vice-chair last session.
“I appreciate the confidence of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers,” Claeys said. “We have several major projects in the works and new projects to consider this session, such as the Docking Building and our state hospitals.”
The committee is made up of appointed members of the House and the Senate from both political parties. Members elect the chair and vice-chair. The committee is responsible for oversight, advising and approving state building projects and leases. Major projects are currently underway at state universities and at the Lansing Correctional Facility in Northeast Kansas.
Claeys also serves as chairman of the House Committee on General Government Budget. He is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and the House Transportation Committee.
