ABILENE — Memorial Health System has announced that Cayle Goertzen, M.D. has joined the medical staff of Heartland Health Care Clinic.

He began seeing patients, of all ages, on Monday. Goertzen is an experienced family medicine physician with obstetric and surgical skills.

Goertzen is a 2007 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita, Via-Christi Family Medicine Residency Program. Since graduating, he has been practicing full spectrum family medicine in Belleville.

“I enjoy caring for all of my patients, from newborn babies to those who are at the end of life, and everything in between,” Goertzen said.

While in Belleville, Goertzen helped to reorganize the hospital’s emergency department trauma response and achieve a level-four trauma certification. He also served as the director of the six-county North Central Regional Trauma council.

“We are so excited Dr. Goertzen has joined our team,” said Harold Courtois, CEO of Memorial Health System. “Not only will he help rebuild our obstetric services, but he brings additional surgical skills as well.”

Historically, family medicine physicians would not perform surgical procedures, but because of Goertzen’s training, skills, and the location of his former practice, he was able to provide minor surgical procedures (such as tonsillectomies, colonoscopies, and appendectomies) in a community that desperately needed them.

Goertzen received a Doctoral Degree in Medicine (M.D.) from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Goertzen is also an advanced trauma life support instructor.
