Edgar Henry Joseph Fischer

Edgar Henry Joseph Fischer, 92, of Salina, passed away April 27, 2019. He was born in rural Lincoln County, Kan., Feb. 21, 1927 to Hugo J. and Anna M. (Schnirch) Fischer. He married Darlene M. Oetting, April 23, 1950, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Sylvan Gove. This union was blessed with a daughter, Miriam Ann and a son, Paul Henry Fischer.

He graduated from Lucas High School as Valedictorian in 1945. In 1946 he was drafted into the Army and served in Nara, Japan until they demobilized the draft in 1947. He worked at farming, house painting, construction, and running the Moonlight Skating Rink in Sylvan Grove where he met his future wife. They were married in 1950. In 1951 he was drafted a second time and served two years, mostly in Tokyo, Japan with the Headquarters Far East Command. He attended Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1958. He worked for John’s Hopkins University Applied Physical Lab in Maryland and California for 34 years. While working, he attended the University of Maryland to earn a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He moved to Salina, in 1996. He was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lincoln, and other Lutheran Churches in Maryland, California, and Kansas. He had many interests including genealogy, coin collecting, amateur radio, and the VFW.

Survivors include: his wife, Darlene; children, Miriam and Paul; sisters, Velma Suelter and Ardella Witte; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews, and relatives and friends. Preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Robert; and sisters, Irma Heart, Berniece Evert, and Arlene Meyer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, at Christ The King Lutheran Church, Salina, with burial at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, 10 miles Southeast of Lincoln. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
