Law Enforcement Memorial Service Wednesday

Fallen officers will be remembered Wednesday during the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service.

The memorial service is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday in Jerry Ivey Park, 2465 Edward Street. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the First Southern Baptist Church, 2401 S. Ohio (across the street from Jerry Ivey Park). Refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The memorial service is open to the public.

According to information from the Salina Police Department, four Salina officers have given their lives in the line of duty. These heroes and their end of watch dates are as follows.

Officer John Stonebraker –- February 12, 1917

Officer Tom Carson –- November 29, 1920

Officer Olney E. Eaton –- May 31, 1942

Officer Jerry R. Ivey –- June 13, 1975

The local memorial service coincides with the national Peace Officers Memorial Day. The United States Congress and President John F. Kennedy in 1962 designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.
