Salina Police were dispatched to the area of Santa Fe and Crawford Monday evening for the report of an intoxicated male in the roadway.
Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said Tuesday that the person who reported the incident said it appeared that the subject almost threw a bottle of alcohol at someone. Officers located the subject, complete with a bottle of alcohol, near the Casey’s at Ninth and Crawford, he said. At that point, no laws had been broken, so officers were attempting to safely assist the man in getting home, Hanus said.
As the officers talked with the subject, the man became slightly agitated and lunged at one of the officers, damaging an ammunition pouch on the officer’s duty belt, Hanus said. As the man was taken into custody, he made threatening statements to one of the officers, Hanus said.
Additional officers were called in, and because the man had become combative, he was taken out of the police vehicle to be placed in a bodyguard restraint system, however before he could be placed in the protective wrap, the man kicked an officer, Hanus said.
Hanus explained that police use the restraint system to help keep subjects from harming themselves and from harming officers.
According to Hanus, Cody E. Cumberland, 23, of Salina, was arrested on suspicion of the following.
- Battery of a law enforcement officer
- Criminal threat
- Damage to property
- Interference with a law enforcement officer
Hanus said damage to the officer’s ammunition pouch was estimated at $50.
