UPDATED: Heat advisories issued for counties in the area

UPDATED 7:30 a.m. Sunday: Some of the counties below have been dropped from the heat advisories. See the latest here.

While temperatures are expected to be normal for next week, the National Weather Service has issued Sunday heat advisories for counties in our area.

The heat advisory is in effect for 1-8 p.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

  • Clay County
  • Cloud County
  • Dickison County
  • Ottawa County
  • Republic County

Additionally, a heat advisory is in effect from 1-9 p.m. Sunday for Jewell and Mitchell counties.

High temperatures Sunday are expected to reach the middle to upper 90s with heat index values climbing to 100 to 105 degrees. Heat-related illnesses are possible for those spending a prolonged amount of time outdoors or those who are more susceptible to heat, such as young children and elderly.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot weather is expected, during which heat illnesses are possible. Limit your outdoor activities during this time, stay in an air-conditioned building, and check up on relatives and neighbors. While outside, drink plenty of water, wear light and loose fitting clothing, and reduce strenuous activities.

For the immediate Salina area, Sunday is expected to be sunny and hot, with a high in the mid-90s and a south wind of 7 to 11 mph.
