The Salina Symphony announces the 2019-2020 season, Musical Landscapes, to be presented under the baton of Dr. David Littrell, interim music
director and conductor.
The season will open October 6 when the Symphony performs a mix of contemporary and romantic era classical music that includes Beethoven’s “The Consecration of the House Overture,” Laurel Littrell’s “The Prairie Ascendant,” Stephanie Berg’s “Ravish and Mayhem,” and Mendelssohn’s “Concerto for Piano, Violin and Strings in D minor” featuring guest artists Lorraine Min, piano, and Terence Tam, violin. The Symphony will close the concert
with Borodin’s “Symphony No. 2 in B minor.”
The annual Symphony Christmas Festival will be held Dec. 14 and 15. The holiday celebration will feature performances by the Symphony, Iron Street Dance Company, Tamara Howe School of Dance, Salina Chorale, Kansas Wesleyan University Chorale and Salina Youth Choir. Guest artist Nick Schroeder will join the Symphony February 9 for “Classical Meets Jazz.” An eclectic mix of classical music and jazz will be presented, including Haydn’s
“Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor” (the “Farewell” Symphony), Buddy Clements’ “Concerto for Jazz Trumpet and Orchestra,” and Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 8 in G Major.”
Patrons will enjoy “An Afternoon of Rodgers and Hammerstein” March 22. The Symphony will be joined by soloists and chorus in presenting the original Broadway orchestrations from “The Sound of Music,” “The King & I,” “Carousel,” “South Pacific,” “State Fair,” and “Oklahoma!”
The season will close May 3 with “Timeless Romance.” Romantic classical works will include selections from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Charpentier’s “Depuis le jour” from “Louise” and Verdi’s “Sempre Libra” from “La Traviata” featuring soprano Janie Brokenicky,
and Saint-Saens’ “Symphony No. 3 in C Minor,” known as the “Organ” Symphony.
Encore Performances
Encore performances this season will include Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” on Nov. 22 and 24. This collaborative production of the Salina Symphony and Ballet Salina, a division of the Tamara Howe School of Dance, will feature two professional dancers as well as approximately 60 local and regional dancers.
The annual Salina Symphony Gala will be held Feb. 22 at the Salina Country Club. The festive evening features dinner, a live/silent auction and entertainment by Symphony musicians.
The Symphony will present Symphony at Sunset on June 6, an outdoor D-Day Commemoration Concert held on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library. Joined by the 1st Infantry Division Band, the Salina Symphony will perform a concert of patriotic favorites and popular classics.
