14-year-old arrested after vehicle stolen

A vehicle stolen from Saint Francis Ministries late last week was recovered Monday after a short pursuit.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Tuesday that officers were sent to the Saint Francis Ministries facility at 1813 S. Ohio on Monday for the report of a stolen 2016 Chevy Impala valued at $18,000. It is believed that keys to the car were taken from a desk at the facility and that the vehicle was stolen sometime on Friday, he said.

Saint Francis Ministries personnel reported to officers that one of the employees had received a photo of the 14-year-old suspect sitting on the hood of the car, Forrester said. The photo was sent by the suspect’s mother, he added.

At about 1 p.m. Monday, a Saint Francis Ministries employee saw the vehicle near the intersection of South 12th Street and Washington Street and reported it to police, Forrester said. An officer then located the vehicle with the suspect in it near the intersection of Cedar Street and South College Avenue, he said. The officer attempted to make a stop, but the vehicle kept driving on multiple streets throughout the area before it was found abandoned near the intersection of North 12th Street and State Street, Forrester said. A vape cartridge with THC in it was found in the vehicle, he said.

The suspect was taken into custody a short while later in an alley behind the 700 block of West Ash Street, Forrester added. The teen was arrested on suspicion of the following, Forrester said.

  • Theft
  • Interference with a law enforcement officer
  • Flee and elude
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Operation of a motor vehicle without a proper license
  • Failure to stop at a stop sign
