UPDATED:NWS issues flood warnings for our area

UPDATED: 11: 35 a.m. Friday: The flood warnings for Dickinson County and Ottawa County have been canceled.


UPDATED 10:25 a.m. Friday: The flood warnings for Saline County have been canceled.


The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued flood warnings for our area.

Saline County

A flood warning for the Smoky Hill River near Mentor will be in effect from late Friday night to Sunday afternoon.

  • At 4:45 a.m. Friday the river level was 12.7 feet.
  • Flood stage is 20.0 feet.
  • Minor flooding is forecast.
  • Forecast: Rise above flood stage by early Saturday morning and continue to rise to near 22.6 feet by early Saturday afternoon. The river will fall below flood stage by Sunday morning.
  • Impact: At 22.0 feet, the lower portions of ball fields and bike trail at Burke Park in Salina floods along with soccer fields near the river south of Magnolia Road.

A flood warning for the Smoky Hill River near New Cambria will be in effect from Saturday morning until Monday afternoon.

  • At 4:45 a.m. Friday the river level was 18.6 feet.
  • Flood stage is 27.0 feet.
  • Minor flooding is forecast.
  • Forecast…Rise above flood stage by late Saturday morning and continue to rise to near 28.4 feet by early Sunday morning. The river will fall below flood stage by Monday morning.
  • Impact: At 28.0 feet, flood waters flow over North Street just east of the intersection of Simpson Road. This location is 2 1/2 miles southwest of New Cambria.

A flood warning for Mulberry Creek near Salina will be in effect from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night.

  • At 4:45 a.m. Friday the creek level was 9.4 feet.
  • Flood stage is 24.0 feet.
  • Minor flooding is forecast.
  • Forecast: Rise above flood stage by late this afternoon and continue to rise to near 25.5 feet by early Saturday morning. The river will fall below flood stage by early Saturday afternoon.
  • Impact: At 26.0 feet…Widespread agricultural flooding can be expected. Depending on if high flows are present on the Saline River this may backup water on the Mulberry Creek which would cause the property on the KOA campground to flood.

Clay County
A flood warning will be in effect for the Republican River at Clay Center from late Friday night until Sunday evening.

  • At 4:30 a.m. Friday the stage was 11.4 feet.
  • Flood stage is 15.0 feet.
  • Minor flooding is forecast.
  • Forecast: Rise above flood stage by early Saturday morning and continue to rise to near 15.4 feet by Saturday early afternoon.The river will fall below flood stage by late Sunday morning.
  • Impact: At 15.0 feet, lowland agricultural flooding occurs from U.S. Highway 24 to Milford Lake.

Dickinson County
A flood warning will be in effect for Chapman Creek near Chapman from this afternoon to late Saturday night.

  • At 4:45 a.m. Friday the creek level was 7.2 feet.
  • Flood stage is 19.0 feet.
  • Minor flooding is forecast.
  • Forecast: Rise above flood stage by late this afternoon and continue to rise to near 20.3 feet by Saturday morning.The river will fall below flood stage by Saturday afternoon.
  • Impact: At 19.0 feet, lowland flooding occurs from near the town of Industry upstream from Chapman to the Smoky Hill River downstream from Chapman.

Ottawa County
A flood warning will be in effect for the Saline River at Tescott from late Friday to Monday afternoon.

  • At 4:30 a.m. Friday the river level was 13.5 feet.
  • Flood stage is 25.0 feet.
  • Minor flooding is forecast.
  • Forecast: Rise above flood stage by early Saturday morning and continue to rise to near 27.2 feet by Saturday early afternoon.The river will fall below flood stage by early Monday morning.
  • Impact: At 28.5 feet, 30th Road bridge over the Saline River floods.

According to NWS, thunderstorm chances are expected to increase across the region once again tonight. Strong to marginally severe storms are possible, along with locally heavy rainfall, which may once again support pockets of flooding.

Thunderstorm chances will linger across the region Saturday and Saturday night. A few strong storms cannot be ruled out, along with locally heavy rain.
