Police ID suspect who struck store twice over the weekend

Police are looking for a persistent thief who struck a south Salina business not once, but twice over the holiday weekend.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Tuesday that the first time the thief struck Vanderbilt’s, 3005 Enterprise Drive, was approximately 10:20 a.m. Saturday. An employee in the back room heard noises coming from the freight room, where no one should have been at the time, Forrester said. The employee went to investigate and through a crack in the door saw a white car parked outside the truck loading area, he said. The employee also observed a man crouched on a pallet, Forrester added. The man left while the employee went to tell the manager, he added.

The man was described as being six-foot-tall, 180 pounds, bald and wearing glasses, a navy blue t-shirt, and light jeans, Forrester said. Surveillance video showed the man enter the freight room, select a box, and exit. The man returned and was then seen by the employee.

Forrester said six pairs of Keen boots, valued at $720 were missing. Additionally, $50 worth of damage was done to the freight room door, he added.

On Sunday, officers were dispatched at 6 a.m. to a commercial alarm at Vanderbilt’s, Forrester said. When they arrived, they found a silver 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser with its back hatch open parked near the freight room door. Officers cleared the building and found no one inside, however, two boxes of miscellaneous clothing and boots valued at nearly $2,000 had been placed next to the door, Forrester said. This time, $400 worth of damage was done to the door, he added.

Surveillance video showed the same male subject from the first incident, this time in a white t-shirt and jeans, going through boxes in the freight area, Forrester said.

Based on the surveillance video and registration from the PT Cruiser, police have identified a suspect and are actively looking for him, Forrester said.
