A Salina man was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and battery of a law enforcement officer.

At approximately 7:45 a.m. Monday, an officer on patrol near the intersection of Roach Street and East Cloud Street saw a man acting strangely, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Tuesday. The man was sweating profusely, stumbling around on the sidewalk, and talking to himself, Forrester said. In the 1600 block of Roach Street, the man stumbled out into the street and nearly was hit by a car, he added.

Forrester said that when the officer made contact with the man, the man identified himself as “John,” however, he was really Travis Shaw, 41, of Salina. Forrester said it appeared that Shaw was under the influence of some sort of narcotics, so paramedics were dispatched to check on him. Shaw became increasingly agitated and when the paramedics attempted to administer medical services, Shaw headbutted one of them and struck another on top of the head with his hand, Forrester said. Shaw also struck one of the officers in the leg, he added.

Shaw was finally restrained and transported to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment, Forrester said. While there, they found on his person several baggies of methamphetamine, Forrester said.

According to Forrester, officers also discovered that Shaw had active warrants — one from Cherokee County for a probation violation for possession of methamphetamine and one from Jefferson City, Mo., for probation violation.

Shaw was arrested on suspicion of the following, Forrester said.

• Possession of methamphetamine
• Possession of drug paraphernalia
• Interference with a law enforcement officer
• Pedestrian under the influence
• No drug tax stamp
• Battery of a law enforcement officer
• Battery
