What if You Threw a Party and Nobody Came

OPINION

By John Fedele

Ok, the firestorm about the name change of the Mayor’s Christmas Party to Winter Holiday Party, is upon us.

In this day of political correctness and all inclusiveness, when ever something that has been a tradition is changed, there will be repercussions. Someone, or some group, will disapprove

So it is with the aforementioned name change. The intent was to boost participation in a free event that included gifts, door prizes, and entertainment, and Santa Claus. Since it occurs during the Holiday Season, and sponsored by the city, it was deemed fit in 1979 to call it the Mayor’s Christmas Party….a gift to the citizens, sorta speak.

The reason for the change was to make it more attractive to people and increase attendance, although, as stated, “Our attendance hasn’t been horrible, but we want to give the event a face-lift and freshen it up.” Changing the name to Winter Holiday Party, implying we are celebrating Winter, while leaving the events unchanged does not seem to be the “freshening up” one would expect. The conclusion by some people or groups is that the city is taking Christmas, hence Christ, out of the season, thereby offending the Christian community, in order to satisfy those who are not members or believers, all in the guise of boosting attendance. As a result the Mayor and City Commissioners have not been invited to attend, and they did not object, which could imply they are in agreement with the name change decision and its implications.

Merry Winter to all
