“Wrecking for the Rec” event canceled

The “Wrecking for the Rec” event at the site of the former Phoenix motel that was scheduled for Saturday, January 18 has been canceled.

“An overwhelmingly positive response from area sports teams and supporters, combined with the inherent danger of a construction site means that we just cannot guarantee a safe experience for the participants,” said Melissa Rose Hodges, executive director of Salina Downtown, Inc. “The number of participants grew much larger than we ever anticipated. This event really appealed to athletes and their families who want to show their support for a rec center in our community. It’s a good problem to have. In addition, demolition of the Phoenix site and construction of Assurance Partners building is proceeding more quickly than scheduled, too.”

Studies of the recreation center project and consideration of potential sites is ongoing, according to Hodges: “It’s not a done deal by any means.”

In the meantime, citizens who would like more information about the Salina Recreation Center project or would like to show their support through donations and comments can visit the Rec Center’s website at www.salinareccenter.org.
