A 36-year-old Minneapolis man escaped serious injury when he fell asleep while driving on I-70 early Monday morning, and drove under the back end of a semi and his car was dragged more than a half-mile.
Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said the driver of the semi, a 57 year old man from Louisiana was eastbound just east of the junction of I-70 and I-135 around 5:50 a.m., when he felt a bump at the back of the semi-trailer. He pulled his truck off of the interstate at the 9th street exit got out of the cab and found Brian Spano standing outside his truck. Spano said he had fallen asleep and drove his 2009 Pontiac Vibe underneath the back of the trailer.
Kochanowski said the car was dragged nearly 2,900 feet. Spano received a scratch on his hand. Neither the truck driver or a passenger were injured.
Kochanowski said two tow trucks were needed to remove the car. One tow truck had to raise the back end of the trailer up, so the car could be pulled away.
