Obituary 17 February, 2014

Jack Evan Shafer, Ada, age 88 passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014. He was born May 1, 1925 at home in Lincoln County, a few miles west of Ada, KS to Rolland George and Esther (VanMeter) Shafer.

He graduated from Ada High School in 1943 then worked various jobs while farming for many years. He retired from farming in 1990.

On October 25, 1947, he married Avis Irene Paul. He was a devoted family man and avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and trapping.

Jack and his brother, Kent, drove cattle, filled neighbors’ silos, and did many helpful things for neighbors along with the jokes they played on them and each other.

For 20 years he measured wheat ground for the ASCS. In 1959 he, his father, and others organized the Salt Creek Watershed District and he was Contracting Officer for 27 years, with Avis being Office Manager. He oversaw the completion of 44 dams.

He was a lifetime member of the Ada Antioch Baptist Church, serving as Deacon for many years, and a charter member of the Ada Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by Avis, his wife of 65 years; brother and sister-in-law Kent and Donnie Shafer; and son-in-law, Doc Carson.

Survivors include daughters, Sue Kline and husband, Frank of Lecompton, and Kay Shafer of Dallas; two step-grandchildren, Carter Kline, his wife Christina and Matthew Kline and his wife, Mary; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 18 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis from 2 P.M. to 7 P.M. where the family will receive friends from 5-7. Private family services will be held in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to Ada Antioch Baptist Church or Good Samaritan Society-Minneapolis.
