Meet Richard Blackwell, BANK VI Hero of the Week!
Mr. Blackwell is being recognized for his contribution to “Buck Meals” at University of United Methodist Church and also for his work as an attorney.
University of United Methodist Church provided Sunday dinners to the students on campus at Kansas Wesleyan University in the 1980’s and early 90’s. Blackwell decided to restart that tradition, make it consistent, and offer a warm meal every Sunday night. So, in 1997, Mr. Blackwell partnered with Dan Newton, and instituted “Buck Meals.” Mr. Blackwell approached a table of students one evening and told them why they charge a dollar for the meal saying, “If we told you it was free you probably would think we were up to something.” The suggested donation for the meal is one dollar. When “Buck Meals” began, approximately fifteen students per week took advantage of the meal. Today, as many as one hundred students show up on Sundays.
The motto at University United Methodist Church is “Serve Christ, Community and Campus”. Blackwell said, “There is something peaceful about walking into a church and having somebody serve you.”
Blackwell has the same servant attitude in his profession as an attorney and has represented many clients unable to pay for his service.
“Occasionally, I give someone free advice and just tell them to have a nice day,” said Blackwell.
Richard Blackwell is going above and beyond to strengthen his church and community. We honor him this week as BANK VI Hero of the Week.
