Community Foundation Announces 2014 YW Legacy Grants

greater salina community foundation logoThe Greater Salina Community Foundation Wednesday announced the 2014 grants from the YW Legacy Fund.

Established in 2006 from assets of the former Salina YWCA and private donations, the fund awards grants to initiatives that align with the mission of the YWCA according to the following criteria:

·Encourage women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision for peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people

· Help children attain their greatest potential

·Create an environment to assist in the physical and mental health and well-being of women and their families

· Purse the elimination of racism wherever it exists

This year, more than $70,000 in requests were reviewed, a record number of requests for this fund. The following grants were awarded for 2014:

·$6,000 Ashby House – to support a writing project with Ann Parr and residents of the shelter dealing with homelessness

·$2,700 Juneteenth Committee – to help fund the Salina Juneteenth Celebration.

·$2,700 Child Advocacy and Parenting Services – to provide family mentoring services for Spanish speaking families

·$2,200 Salina Art Center to support a special project addressing women’s bodies after childbirth

·$2,500 DVACK to establish an art therapy program specifically designed for women and children who have been in abusive situations

The following grants were made possible through a partnership with the Elden Miller Trust. Grants funded through this partnership meet specific funding criteria established by the Trust. Grant administration is provided by the Community Foundation.

·$4,900 Salina Housing Authority to provide scholarships and uniforms for 7 women to get allied medical certificates to assist with employment opportunities

·5,000 Heartland Programs to support Family Connections relationship and parenting education programs

Total Awards: $26,000
