Lawrence, KS. – With only 22 regular season games remaining this season, some CPIFL teams are playing their best football of the year as the playoffs are looming. Teams still have plenty to play for and three CPIFL players have been recognized as Players of the Week for their performance in Week 9.
Offensive Player of the Week: Rocky Hinds, Wichita Wild
Hinds and the Wild offense have been unstoppable scoring over 60 points in back-to-back weeks as Wichita looks to stay in position for the top seed in the playoffs. On Saturday vs. Oklahoma, Hinds passed for 169 yards and seven touchdowns in Wichita’s 67-37 victory. Hinds also added a rushing touchdown. The Champions Bowl I MVP leads the league in touchdown passes with 27 and has thrown the most touchdown passes in CPIFL history with 68. The Wild will play Salina this weekend in their first match-up since last season’s Champions Bowl.
Defensive Player of the Week: Marcus Miles, Lincoln Haymakers
Miles got the scoring started for the Haymakers with a fumble recovery for a touchdown helping the Haymakers to a 58-27 victory over Bloomington. Miles added six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in the game. Miles is tied for 10th in the league with 6.5 tackles for loss and is second on the team in tackles with 37. The Haymakers have a bye in Week 10 and will look to stay in the playoff hunt as they host Kansas on May 9.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Lorenzo Brown, Sioux City Bandits
Brown’s kick returns helped ignite the Bandits offense to score 56 points, which is the most Salina has allowed since Week 1. Sioux City defeated the Bombers by a score of 56-42 on Saturday. Brown returned five kicks for 160 yards and a return for a touchdown. Brown’s average of 32.0 yards per return is the second highest return average by a player in the CPIFL this season. Bandit players hold the top two spots in kick return average with Brown averaging 23.3 yards on 15 kickoff returns and teammate Frederick Bruno averaging 22.4 yards on 17 kickoff returns. Sioux City hosts Oklahoma on Saturday.
Week 10 is filled with games between teams who are jockeying for playoff position. The week’s games will all take place on Saturday with Wichita visiting Salina, Omaha travelling to Dodge City, Sioux City hosting Oklahoma and Kansas visiting Bloomington.
