A 25-year-old Salina man is jailed after he allegedly rape a woman at her home early Friday morning, and then grabbed cash out of the register of a convenience store early Saturday morning.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said Shaundrick Staten raped and robbed a 38-year-old Salina woman after giving her a ride home from a convenience store just after midnight early Friday.
The woman who knew Staten as a casual acquaintance accepted the ride home. Staten asked if he could use the bathroom and when the woman said okay, he displayed a sawed-off shotgun, told the woman to be quiet and then sexually assaulted her. Staten took the woman’s wallet, cell phone and some prescription medication and then left.
Early Saturday morning around 3:45am, Staten went into the Casey’s convenience store at 9th and Crawford bought a pack of cigarettes, then used a prepaid cash card to buy fuel for a Dodge Durango he was driving. He went back inside the store, and while the clerk was counting cash at the register Staten grabbed the money and ran out of the store and then drove away east on Crawford.
Police were able to determine who Staten was by reviewing security video, and went to an apartment at 500 E. Crawford, and found Staten. They also found cash from the Casey’s, a sawed-off shotgun, and the prescription medication taken from the woman who had been raped the night before.
Staten was booked into the Saline County Jail on several charges in connection with the rape of the woman and robbery of the convenience store.
He was also charged with taking a cell phone and headset from a Salina man back in February, and threatening that same man with a handgun and demanding money on April 26th.
