The following is a release from the Salina Police Department concerning the shooting Wednesday afternoon near the Friendship Center in Centennial Park:

At 2:18 p.m., May 21, 2014, three officers from the Salina Police Department responded to the 700 block of Commanche in regards to a woman reporting her boyfriend, Jose Carrillo, 45-years-old, was intoxicated and had pointed a rifle at her while she was at her residence. Upon the officers’ arrival, they contacted the woman in a nearby park and were in the process of collecting preliminary information.

The woman saw Carrillo walking northbound on Commanche toward them and alerted the officers. The officers saw Carrillo carrying a rifle at which time the officer told the victim to run in the opposite direction. Carrillo then started firing several rounds at officers. The officers started to take cover and one officer returned fire hitting Carrillo on his right cheek and right upper shoulder. The other officers ordered him to drop his weapon and he complied. He was taken into custody and transported to the Salina Regional Health Center for non-life threatening injuries and stayed overnight. Thankfully, no officer was injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The woman reported she had been in an off-and-on relationship with Carrillo for the past year. On this date, he left the residence around 10:30 a.m and returned intoxicated at around 2:00 p.m.. The woman told Carrillo he needed to leave which upset him. Carrillo went to the bedroom and the woman saw him retrieving a rifle. Carrillo told the woman he was going to kill her. The woman ran from the house and called the police.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is taking the lead in this investigation and we are assisting. We have found two parked and unnattended vehicles that were struck by gunfire. A fence, shed and one of officer’s patrol car was also struck one time.
