GREAT BEND- On Thursday Veterans Lake in the City of Great Bend experienced a massive die off of fish. City crews have been cleaning up the lake as best they can.

The city contacted the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism to assist in determining the cause of the problem.

The lake has been identified as experiencing a blue-green algae bloom. Usage of the lake has been restricted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for many weeks.

The City recently hired a consultant to identify, address and fix problems. Neither the city nor the consultants have been able to determine if the blue-green algae bloom contributed to the fish kill.

The city told users of the park to stay away from the lakeshore so workers can complete the cleanup.
