Leonard Albert Gummert, of Salina, son of Albert Gummert and Avis Snyder, was born July 23, 1935, in Marshalltown, Iowa, and died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at the age of 79 years, one month and 26 days.

Leonard was baptized at Dillon Lutheran Church, Dillon, Iowa, where he was also confirmed. He was raised on the family farm north east of Marshalltown. He received his education through the eighth grade from the rural community school at Ferguson, Iowa, close to his rural home.

Leonard was united in marriage to Sharon Elsie Freiberg on Feb. 10, 1956, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marshalltown.

He worked at an implement dealership in Marshalltown for several years, which then began about a 30-year span of working for several different farmers in the Marshalltown area. In 1988, he began a 10-year career with Security Bank in Marshalltown, retiring in 1998. At that time, Leonard and Sharon moved to Salina, to be close to their oldest son, Dave, and his family. Leonard then worked part time at Southgate Dillons store until his health forced him to retire again. He continued his hobby of woodworking, furnishing numerous toys, games and puzzles to Heartland Head Start and Sunflower Adult Daycare, both located in Salina.

Preceding him in death were his daughter, Donna Jane Klinefelter; his parents, Albert and Avis Gummert; and his sister, Betty Bennett.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; sons, David Dean (Kathy) Gummert and Gary Allen (Dorie) Gummert; daughter, Dianne Elaine (the Rev. Dr. Michael) Bingenheimer; brother, Dale (Barb) Gummert; sister, Delores (Azmi) Hajjaj; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 111 W, Magnolia, Salina. A private family inurnment will be at a later date to take place in Marshalltown.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Joseph Witt “Joe” Davis, 89, of Salina, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Presbyterian Manor in Salina.

Mr. Davis was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo. He lived there until he joined the U.S. Navy in World War II. He graduated from Kansas State College of Agriculture in 1950. He and his wife, Jackie, were married right after he graduated from college.

He worked for Maurer-Neuer Packing Co. in Arkansas City for three years, then for Swift & Co. in Kansas City, Kan., and Rochelle, Ill., for 27 years. He finished his working career at Kennedy & Coe CPA firm in Salina, retiring in 1987.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Jaqueline, of the home, and daughter, Janet Dunnell and husband Al, of Bellevue, Wash., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Davis and Adaline (Witt) Davis; brothers, Dr. George W. Davis Jr. and wife Marguerite and Robert W. Davis and wife Betty.

Mr. Davis was a member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Sons of the American Revolution, American Legion and Tin Can Sailors Association (an association of men who fought on Navy destroyers) and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

There will be no visitation. His body was cremated. The ashes will be inurned in Rose Meron Cemetery in Oak Hill. A private graveside service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, Sunrise Presbyterian Church or Good Samaritan Fund at Salina Presbyterian Manor.
