Kansas official using own salary to push local shopping

ANTHONY, Kan. (AP) – A new Harper County commissioner is using his $16,000 annual salary to offer rebates to people who shop locally.

Jim Gates is giving a $25 cash rebate to anyone who spends at least $200 on Saturday at one of the four grocery stores in the south-central Kansas county.

The Hutchinson News reports the rebate rises to $50 for someone who spends $300.

Residents who want to collect a rebate must bring grocery receipts from the designated day to Gates’ office in downtown Anthony.

The 64-year-old lifelong Anthony resident says he thought about not collecting the salary at all, but decided to use it for the incentives instead.

Gates says in future months he’ll offer the incentives for people who spend money in Harper County’s restaurants and retail stores.
