WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – An NCAA official has suggested the governing body for college sports could be willing to revisit its rules covering sports agents in college baseball to better reflect the modern marketplace.
Amateur baseball players can skip college and be drafted right out of high school. They are allowed to enlist advisers who can consult with major league teams as long as no money changes hands or contracts are agreed upon.
Dennis Poppe, the NCAA’s managing director of baseball, told college coaches earlier this year that new rules acknowledging the sport’s “unique set of circumstances” could be on the way.
That hasn’t stopped the NCAA from suspending freshmen pitchers at Nebraska and Wichita State for at least half the current season
after their advisers reportedly made improper contact with pro teams.
