Salina Public Schools Friday announce The Master and Horizon Teachers in the district:
Master Teacher: Nyla Romeiser
Nyla is in her sixth year as second grade teacher at Coronado Elementary School. Previously, she spent three years teaching third grade and one year as the K-5 science teacher at Coronado.
She currently serves on the PAS committee, calendar committee, and the UD114 political action committee. She is a NEA building representative and delegate for the KNEA Representative Assembly and the UD114 sectional. Nyla has been involved in the math horizontal and vertical alignment in USD 305 and has worked with the second grade teachers throughout the district on the report card, curriculum, and common assessments. She also served on the negotiations team for one year.
Prior to her work in Salina, Nyla taught bilingual kindergarten for three years and first grade for two years in Salinas, California, and she was a district math mentor. She also taught K-5 science for two years in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Nyla received a BA with a major in biology in 1992 from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Colorado College in Colorado Springs in 1993.
In addition to her teaching duties and district committee work, Nyla is an active member of her church, serving on the finance committee. She helped plan the new children’s area at the Smoky Hill Museum, in addition to keeping up with her children’s many activities. She loves to travel and learn new things, and she enjoys helping children discover information and solve problems.
Horizon Teachers
2015 Secondary Horizon Award – Collin Carlson
Collin Carlson’s enthusiasm and conviction for learning is well received by students and colleagues. He plans, executes and reflects on his lessons with a deep commitment to students’ achievement. Collin has a mature, methodical and student-centered nature that serves his classroom management well. His work with guardians provides for dignity and respect while resolving a problem.
Activities in his class include the opportunity to write frequently, read rigorous complex text, and engage in academic discussions. The connection Collin has with his students demonstrates that he cares about students first and content second. Collin plans, executes, and reflects on his lessons with a deep conviction focused and geared toward student success. He is an efficient and effective communicator who is not afraid to speak with guardians when he feels a student needs to work on being safe, civil or successful. Collin works tirelessly with guardians and students in a manner that always provides both with dignity and respect while also resolving the problem.
Collin is a true role model in that he thrives on learning. He possesses a deep conviction to constantly learn and improve; it is evident that this intrinsic motivation is driven by his desire to boost student achievement.
2015 Elementary Horizon Award – John Zamora
John Zamora is an enthusiastic teacher who makes physical education an enjoyable class. His positive demeanor is evidenced by students’ excitement to get to their PE class, or see John in the classroom and by the way colleagues find him very approachable and easy to talk with.
John’s kindness, intelligence and humor draw others to him. With both students and staff he communicates effectively, building trusting relationships that are so important to healthy development to students and professional efficiency to adults. He has worked with the building PTO and helps to make school family activities a success. He has organized the school marathon and field day as well as inspiring students with special personnas at Friday Fanfare.
John’s willingness to collaborate with others and lead by example set him apart from many. John joined the building’s special teachers team and has been willing to do most anything he is asked, including dressing up as Muscle Man and doing silly dances. He is an excellent role model for our young men in the building. He not only demonstrates excellence in education but also excellence within his daily character and interactions with students.
