Jacqueline (Shipley) Nelson, 82, Minneapolis, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Salina Regional Health Center. She was born June 24, 1932 in Goddard to Oscar and Fern Shipley.
Jacquie was a 1950 graduate of Goddard High School and a 1954 graduate of Wichita State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education. She was united in marriage with Joe R. Nelson in Goddard on July 3, 1955. In 1970, Jacquie graduated from Fort Hays State University with her Master’s Degree. She taught Business Education at Minneapolis High School from 1954-1958 and Salina Central High School from 1958-1995. After her retirement she worked as a substitute teacher until 2003.
Jacquie was a member of the Minneapolis First United Methodist Church, Kansas Business Education Association, and a lifetime member of the National Education Association. She was also a member of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, Salina Area Retired School Personnel; and the Wichita State Alumni Association. She also served as a Kansas President and Board Member of the Mountain-Plains Business Education in the 1960’s. She was a former member of the American Association of University Women and Study Groups and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Jacquie was active in the Salina City Teachers Association now known as the Salina NEA. She worked with other women as a self-appointed committee to get equal pay for women in the early 1960’s.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe on September 30, 2006; brothers-in-law Roger French, Gene Klein, Reece Nelson, and Jim Lee; nephew Randy Lee; and niece Beth Nelson.
Survivors include her son Monte Nelson and his wife Holly of Minneapolis; grandchildren Kersti and Ryker Nelson of Minneapolis; siblings Curtis Shipley and his wife Judy of ElDorado, Judy French of Phoenix, AZ, Marilyn Klein of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Kermit Shipley and his wife Shirley of Minneapolis; sister-in-law Clea Nelson of Salina; nieces and nephews Jeff Shipley, Stacey Shipley Homuth, Stephanie Shipley Nichols, Brett Shipley, Ashley Shipley Gilpin, Rick Nelson, Jim Nelson, Janie Clemow, Rita Stroberg, and Janet Vonada; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, and friends.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 27 at the First United Methodist Church, Minneapolis. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Salina Education Foundation (LIFE) or the Minneapolis High School Alumni Scholarship Fund.
