Salina Police say a stepped up effort this year contributed to a much quieter and safer 4th of July holiday weekend.

According to Salina Police Captain Chris Trocheck, a total of 201 fireworks complaints were taken between June 27th and July 4th. Most of the complaints were for noise and illegal shooting.

Trocheck said that a total of 32 fireworks citations were issued, 28 by the Salina Police Department and 4 by the Salina Fire Department.

Trocheck credits public service announcements that were used to remind the public that even though fireworks are now legal, there are still restrictions placed upon them. He says that overall, this year was an improvement over previous years as the public has become more aware of what the restrictions are.

Trocheck indicated that the Salina Fire Department responded to five small firework-related fires, while Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said that Saline County Rural Fire responded to two minor fires in the county. Kochanowski also said the Sheriff’s office received only one firework complaint over the holiday weekend.

Overall, complaints and citations decreased this year. In 2014, officers responded to 166 complaints on the 3rd and 4th of July alone. Fire calls slightly decreased as well as Salina firefighters were called to six firework-related fires a year ago.
